Did That Hurt?
Self-advocacy for a safe and awesome tattoo experience
$4.00
28 pages/Half size
by Nyxia Grey

I don't normally carry tattoo zines that solely deal with choosing tattoo shops, aftercare, etc because I come from a family of tattooers who have a combined experience of over 75 years, so it doesn't feel right to me to promote tattoo zines by folks who aren't familiar with the profession ... BUT, THIS ZINE IS ONE I CAN STAND BEHIND.

Nyxia and her husband own a tattoo studio and she has compiled some solid information about choosing a tattoo studio, your tattoo artist, things to look out for, caring for your tattoo, and feeling comfortable. The Patron Bill of rights mentioned in this zine is new to me. I had never heard of it before, but I think it's definitely a must have for shops!

This full color zine is rad. I do believe if you make good choices to choose an artist you trust then you should be able to turn to them when you have any questions at all. I think this zine is an awesome resource for those of us who like to decorate our bodies in a safe and empowering way!

The East Village Inky #59

The East Village Inky #59
$3.00
40 pages/ Quarter size
by Ayun Halliday

New York zinester Ayun Halliday takes her son Milo to Boraomale, Italy for a weeklong music retreat with 9 other teenagers. Along the way, Hilliday grapples with her inner demons (aptly named “Bitchmother” and “Animal Mother”), uncooperative iPhones, and bonding with her seventeen year-old. Halliday’s misadventures only increase once she and Milo arrive at “le Stanze della Musica.” In Boraomale, Halliday must contend with the likes of teaching veganism to their Italian hosts, public dancing to The Pretenders, and a portrait of John Cleeve Green. Littered with small comics and hilarious tangents, The East Village Inky returns after a year-long hiatus in full, charming glory.

Aw, man. Any zine starting out with an obituary is okay by me. This zine has everything: tributes to ten suicidal celebrities, General Hospital character bios, a playlist titled “Peter Lorre Muzak”…every page is jam-packed with exciting photos, collages and illustrations, and is fast becoming a personal favorite.

‘“I need to focus! I need to focus!” she cried, whispering the four words over and over, concentrating on not being able to.”

by Jolie Noggle

In this issue, Jolie interviews a bunch of different people; a couple of different bands, an artist, and a stand up comedian. You’ll find out how other people get their kicks, what their interests are, how they define success, what they want from their futures and what they do in the meantime. This is why I love interview zines, because you get a peak into other people’s lives whether you know them or not. Also, lots of photos and mentions of Jolie’s new projects.

The Escape Artist #19

$1.00
16 pages/Half size
by Jolie Noggle

Jolie starts off writing about femininity, masculinity, and how they affect her comfort level with others. This introduces the topic of female comedians. Jolie writes about some awesome ladies and how she became interested in their work - Julie Brown, Janeane Garofalo, Margaret Cho, Sarah Silverman, and Amy Schumer are some of the comedians Jolie features.

"... I know I get along with & feel more comfortable with gals that are more butch or equally as butch as I am! ... i was always a tomboy. I feel like I am "in touch with my feminine side" but a lot of that shit just makes me uneasy."

The Escape Artist #32
$2.50
20 pages/Half size
by Jolie Noggle

Issue #32 of The Escape Artist is quick & fulfilling read. I enjoy reading about Jolie's visits to comedy clubs to see some of her favorite comedians. I've never been to a comedy show, so it's cool to read about her experience, the comedians, and the different venues. She writes about seeing David Attell and Tom Segura when they passed through Ohio.

In rare fashion, Jolie writes about racism and a recent online incident where something she made was called out by some folks and how it made Jolie feel.

Also, there are TWO rad coloring pages of Margaret Cho and Amy Schumer - super fun.

Eternal Nap

Eternal Nap
a zine for taphophiles and morbid enthusiasts
$2.00

36 pages/Half size
by Heather Kennedy

This zine is stunning and has really inspired me to make some steps in embracing death as much as one can who fears the end. In Eternal Nap, Heather writes about her fascination with visiting cemeteries and studying the history of people and places; something that started at an early age. She includes beautiful photos of cemeteries and roadside memorials. There are also some contribution pieces by others who resonate with the peacefulness of cemeteries.

This zine is for all that share this interest with me - the taphophiles, the history buffs, the genealogists, the adventurers, the curious and the morbid enthusiasts.

Eternal Nap #2
a zine for taphophiles and morbid enthusiasts
$2.00

36 pages/Half size
by Heather Kennedy

Another interesting and visually appealing zine by Heather. Eternal Nap #2 is super great for the following reasons:
  • Heather goes into the history of a few people whose graves she has come across in her cemetery travels.
  • She shares photos and writes about homemade and geological headstones.
  • Unique cemetery finds!
  • A headstone mystery that will leave you baffled and wanting more info ...

Oh cemeteries, how I love thee. I've been interested in cemeteries since I was a child, and the hobby of exploring graveyards has come and gone throughout my life but has been very strong over the last decade.

In this diary-style issue, Nyxia writes about the ups and downs in the relationship with her husband. We experience the excitement and confusion, the love and the loss. She fixates on death, shares her therapy experience, and working on filling the void she feels. It's well-written and very honest.

Looking out the window I can almost believe that what I want out of life can actually be achieved. Watching the silken trees I can almost convince myself that wishing to die was a horrible idea.

This zine contains a lot of powerful material regarding body image and what it's like for the zine writer to live with an eating disorder. She touches on feminism, consent, and issues with her mother.

Nyxia writes about moving 1,000 miles to Salem, MA and starting a new life - a hard beginning, but she sticks it out. I appreciate the honest writing and the cut & paste layout in this issue. Please read with care - some material may be triggering.

Even though I am happy here I am still actively searching for a constant state of belonging. It might not exist for me.

Nyxia writes in-depth about her eating disorder - how it makes her feel, the way it torments her and affects how she interacts with food in social situations. She also discusses the deep grief she deals with regarding her father's death. Nyxia shares the ways in which she has attempted to reach out to her father after his passing.

But yet we try to achieve it. to bend the unbendable, to break the unbreakable, to mold the unmoldable and it never gets us any closer to that ideal. i am a fucking hypocrite.

Everything is Fine #3
For Elise.

$2.00

32 pages/Half size
by Nyxia Grey

Nyxia writes about the excellent time she had during Ladies Rock Camp Boston. She formed a band, screamed her heart out, and felt a freedom she had never felt before.

She discusses something that plagues a lot of feminists (this is my feminist opinion) - we stand up for others against the bullshit society expectations/norms that are looming over us, but deep within ourselves, we struggle with our own issues and insecurities. It doesn't make us less of a feminist, it just makes us human. You are not alone, Nyxia <3

Nyxia also talks about her past eating disorder, dealing with body image stuff, but how awesome it is to care for her dog, Stevie. She ends this zine with the very sad news that her teenage niece committed suicide. Nyxia touches on how traumatic that was/is and how she is attempting to work through the loss.

In a world where the patriarchy would love nothing more than to see me shrink away so that the space I occupy is next to nothing, anything that makes my presence bigger is a radical act.

Facebook Chats With Women

$3.00
12 pages/Half size
by Clara Heathcock

I fear my words won't do this zine justice. First, it's printed in color and it's simply gorgeous. Second, I love the drawings of different women with each quote from their Facebook chat. The chats cover insecurities, friendship, crushes, and honesty.

More girl love like this, please.

From Clara:
  • A lot of women are worried they don't exist.
  • A lot of women express guilt when they speak. It's cus they feel guilty for existing more often then they genuinely doubt what they're saying.

Fearsome:
a mini-zine about the power of strength-training

$3.00

This is the most badass zine on strength-training that I have read. Okay, it's the only zine on strength-training that I've read, but that doesn't dismiss the awesomeness of this zine. It's empowering, motivational, funny, and has cool artwork.

If you are into fitness, loving your body, or laughing, then don't pass this gem up.

A beer zine, Summer 2016

by David Nilsen

Librarian David Nilsen who also leads a monthly beer class & tasting series has begun writing this quarterly zine, Fuggles. Why, it is a beer zine, of course!

While this zine contains reviews of various beers, I feel like the true excitement for me is the quality of his writing paired with the personal stories included with each of the reviews.

There is also a travel story about Belgium, a cool article, Using All Five Senses to Evaluate a Beer, and color photos.

Beer fans, don't pass this one up!

David has hooked me again with his storytelling. I now want to visit Brussels, walk until my feet scream, and photograph everything. He writes about taking a second trip to Brussels with his wife, his favorite bars in Bruges, breweries in Bruges, and even foods to try!

He reviews The Beer Geek's Handbook: Living a Life Ruled by Beer and Cookies and Beer: Bake, Pair, Enjoy. Included are reviews of vintage beers and pumpkin beers. My favorite part of the zine is the piece about visiting Grand Marais, Michigan, and the Lake Superior Brewing Company.
