hairy femme mother

hairy femme mother
$2.00

40 pages/Quarter size
by Jen

I adore this zine. Jen writes so honestly about the beginning of her body hair awareness at age 10. She discusses using creams to lighten her mustache and how she has to shave her legs every day to keep them smooth. Jen also shares her mad love for her hairy arm pits and the joy they bring her. She brings up the topic of how hairy is equated to being "dirty" in how our society views femininity. Jen shares personal stories of how her body hair affects how she interacts with her partners. She talks about the politics of body hair.

From the outro: The ways I choose to groom (and not groom) my body hair may not be accessible for other people. I want you to do you in the ways that  you need to. I want you to be safe and loved and seen but on your terms with your body.

by Jen & Contributors

From the intro, "I received so much amazing feedback from Issue One and I knew I wanted to open up the next issue for submissions. I wanted to focus on sharing stories about being a femme with body hair: with a particular focus on femmes of color, black femmes, trans femmes, and gender non-conforming femmes."

I Love Soda #2
$2.00
12 pages/Half size
by Rebecca B.

Rebecca writes about her zine-making process and her love for photography. Including pictures of the various sodas she talks about is an important part of her layout. In this issue, Rebecca includes fan mail from a fellow soda drinker, soda comments from Portland Zine Symposium attendees, and soda options aside from big name brands.

I am somewhat wary of energy drinks. They make me nervous.

I enjoyed the artsy vibe of this issue. It's printed in three different colors and reminds me of soda pop art! In this image heavy zine, you'll read about Rebecca's top five sodas, the top selling soft drinks of 2012, and interesting soda finds.

Diet coke is on the cover because since 2010 they've outsold Pepsi, pretty impressive for a diet soda.

Rebecca is the queen of soda updates - seriously! I love how she stays informed about what's in, out, or coming back into the soda world. In this issue, we learn more about Mt. Dew's Baja Blast, the Top 10 Soft Drinks for 2013, zines fests & soda talk, great soft drink images, and mini soda stories from people who have filled out Rebecca's soda survey - which is also included in the zine!

: Birthday Week, November/December 2014
$2.00
10 pages/Quarter size
by artnoose

artnoose introduces to her Birthday Week. She lists the variety of things planned during her previous Birthday week in Pittsburgh - dance parties, dinners, and bike rides to name a few. Birthday Week in the Bay Area has been a different experience, specifically due to her father's death and recent Oakland protests.

My heart was like a flamethrower at that point in time, to be honest. So much exuberance. A single day could never contain it.

Terrible Twos
March-April 2015
$2.00
10 pages/Quarter size
by artnoose

Oh, the glorious Terrible Twos. This issue of Ker-bloom deals with this rite of passage of sorts (for both child and parent) and describes the micromanaging by her son during this age. She ends the zine cheering that age three has arrived.

This is a realistic glimpse into the reality of the Terrible Twos.

'We have one story around the house about when my child asked for a tomato to be cut in half, and when it was, demanded that it be fixed. My housemate actually taped the tomato back together.

This issue of Ker-bloom! is about a recent friend of artnoose's that recently passed away. She walks a bit down memory lane and shares the moments that brought the two of them together, things she credits him for and the times she wasn't there when she thought she should be. A beautiful remembrance.

Friendships made at the cusp of adulthood are formative, even if they don't last through that transition.

I liked this issue a lot. I enjoyed the way teaching lessons to her child are parallel to learning and gaining knowledge from stories. artnoose recommends reading Watership Down which I will be adding to my TBR list. She emphasized the importance of each person, big and small, wild and tamed. How we all play a vital role in this life.

At some point in parenting you have to expect that kids just do what they want. Maybe at all points in parenting. You make a great effort to have these kids, and then you slowly start letting them go.

First, my scanner did not do this cover justice! In real life, this zine cover is a vibrant pink color - think 80's neon.

Artnoose writes about the Ghost Ship fire in Oakland that took 36 lives. Readers get a tiny peek into the celebration of life for one of the lives lost, and what artnoose took away from the tragedy while reflecting on her own youth in sketchy housing.

Along with the personal was of course political. Before the smoke even cleared, the city began remarking how the Ghost Ship had been an illegal residence with numerous fire code concerns and no license
 as an event space.

Dream Vacations

$2.00
10 pages/Quarter size
by artnoose

Visually, this is one of my favorite issues of Ker-bloom! I adore the color combinations as well as the artwork inside.
artnoose gets dreamy in this issue. Listing her top three dream vacations, she goes into detail of why she is drawn to these places and what she would do while she is there.

Or maybe the strange thing is to live somewhere and have fantasies of being someplace that you're not. I know that it's somewhat amazing to be alive at all.

Like an Octopus

$2.00
10 pages/Quarter size
by artnoose

I always look forward to cracking open a new issue of Ker-bloom! The letterpress layouts vary with each one. This issue has a gorgeous octopus and inside, artnoose explains how she relates to this underwater creature. She talks about being a mother of a five-year-old and a few of her worries.

For most of his life, I didn't sleep well enough to remember my dreams; for years I didn't remember a single one.

Cargo Bike

by artnoose

Artnoose writes about biking most of her life and not being dependant on a car. As her son gets older, she's had to adjust the way they commute and upgrade to a cargo bike.

I biked throughout the first 37 weeks my pregnancy, locking up to street signs because no birth-related building ever had a bike rack--why would they?

The Greatest Teacher

$2.00
10 pages/Quarter size
by artnoose

This issue of Ker-bloom! focuses on lessons and teachers for both Artnoose and her son, finding the balance of supporting your child in what they want to pursue, and also how to guide them when they want to stop.

I struggled internally, losing sleep over whether this moment was in fact momentous or not. Was I teaching him that he should try new things only until they become challenging, and then quit?

If This Is How It Starts

$2.00
10 pages/Quarter size
by artnoose

This thoughtful issue is about the brain - remembering things and processing thoughts. Artnoose has a parent with Alzheimer's, so when she can't think clearly or finish a sentence, she wonders if this is the beginning of the end or perhaps the explanation is that she is a sleep-deprived parent of a young child.

I went from pregnancy spaciness directly into new parent pandemonium, followed by years of single parent brain drain and long-term sleep deprivation.

Kurt Cobain Was Lactose Intolerant Conspiracy Zine

$2.00
16 pages/Half size
by Kelli

All of the signs of lactose intolerance were there, we just didn’t look hard enough. Kurt was obviously lactose intolerant and it was his food allergy that contributed to his heroin abuse and death. Just look at the lyrics of “scentless apprentice” or the complaints he made about stomach pain in his MTV interview, or even the comparison of his name with “curds and whey.” It was the milk. If only we had seen it earlier.

“I heard your screams, Kurt, but it was too late.
I raise my glass of chocolate rice milk and salute you.
you will not be forgotten.”
