Taking Care of Amy

Taking Care of Amy

by Sage Adderley-Knox
Sage writes, " I took care of my lovely neighbor during the last two months of her life. She was battling stage four ovarian cancer and recommended to go to a hospice facility, something she did not want to do. This zine is about our brief, but memorable friendship, my drive to help her die on her own terms, and the ugliness of cancer."
Amy knew it was coming, too. She was in constant pain. She talked about death and I listened. I couldn't imagine life without Amy. I was spending roughly 20-25 hours each week with her. She had become a major part of my life. I planned my days around her needs.
BONUS: The zine comes with a pack of marigold seeds that I harvested from my garden over the summer. Amy was a florist, so it seemed fitting to share her passion with you all.

I'll be honest - I was having a super busy morning, and I hadn't had a chance to read this issue, but it looked so enticing, so I picked it up and began reading, and I couldn't stop. I put everything on hold and read this beauty in one sitting. It's so good, y'all.
First, Kelli is a talented writer. That is clear.
She rolls back time & takes readers on a ride to her past, specifically to 1990, when she was a suburban teenager who falls for a slightly older homeless punk. Kelli writes in-depth about their lovely, yet rocky, relationship and what she learned along the way.
Once we were hanging on Melrose after months of dating, when he wanted to show me where he slept. We walked off the avenue into an alley where a dark blue-green cadillac sat collecting dust. He opened the door and escorted me in to his "living room" -- the light blue upholstered bench front seat.

They Call Me Rocket
Stories of a Rose City Stripper
by Rocket
$4.00
24 pages/Half size
From the intro, " ...composed of journals she's kept over her years of dancing and the notes scribbled on cocktail napkins. The short stories contained in this first zine are awkward, bizarre, sexy and honest .."
This zine has a slick layout and great imagery. Rocket shares how she became a stripper in Portland, from the first frightening, yet enthralling night on stage, to becoming a confident dancer. She includes short stories about other dancers, how they interacted with one another, and some experiences with clients. I enjoyed the frank writing and was easily transplanted into her colorful world through her writing. Looking forward to the next issue!
Princess was a braggart. On top of brazenly talking money, she'd let it pile up haphazardly on her makeup case like a paper trophy. When she got around to counting it, she'd display it neatly out in the open in our customary rubber-banded stacks of twenty. I secretly hoped that one of our more desperate dancers would steal it.
